This week has been the craziest experience for all the students and the staff here at Adrian College. It is only the second week of the Spring Semester, and there are already issues. The weather has started affecting most of the students and the staff here. When everyone returned to school from winter break for the second semester to start, there was already a lot of snow. Most of the roads were icy and a bit difficult for some drivers, and some issues for residence halls were a bit of a problem too.
In Lowry Hall, an all female upper class student’s dorm, the water pipes burst, and the radiators went out. There was also no hot water due to the pipes bursting. In my room, my radiator kept making sounds that it was not supposed to make, and I was afraid that it was going to burst. I live on the second floor, and I was praying that it would not burst and cause a flood and make a huge mess. Another hall that had issues was Herrick. Their hot water went out due to the cold.
The first week when everyone returned the temperatures were dropping quickly like raindrops falling from the sky. The temperature was in the 20s last week and this past Monday, Martin Luther King Jr Day, It dropped down to below 10 degrees. It has not been this cold in an extremely hot minute. These past two days the temperature throughout the day is five or below and at night it is in the negatives! With the wind picked up, it’s below, in the negatives. I feel bad for the students having to drive in this cold or walk in this cold. Luckily all my classes are in Mahan so it is not far, but the weather still affected me. Another thing I have heard about is sickness, I have heard there have been students and professors who reported being sick due to the temperatures dropping.
I was on my way back to campus this past weekend when I got a text from Travis Erxleben about work. I was going to ask him a favor form since I was heading to work when he told me that he had gotten sick, which made my work a bit harder since he was not there, and germs spread faster than race cars. Germs spread even faster at schools since you are by so many people.
Some Classes that I have heard have been canceled due to the weather, some online classes were even canceled due to professors not being able to get online. Granted, Adrian College looks so pretty in the wintertime, but the temperature the past couple of days were freezing. Hopefully for the rest of this semester it ended up like this again, but hey, it was a winter wonderland here at Adrian College.
